What is a Capsule Wardrobe?
A capsule wardrobe is a collection of outfits and accessories that can be matched to make different outfits for different occasions. It is a properly curated collection of essential clothing items that can be mixed or styled to create multiple outfits for different engagements or outings for a specific period.
The idea of a creating a capsule wardrobe is such that you have a small but versatile wardrobe that saves you the stress of indecisiveness on what to pick to wear, at the same time conserving your money.
Let's touch quickly on more benefits of curating a capsule wardrobe.
1. It reduces impulse buying. Just if you're one who buys cloth for every occasion or you sew every now and then. This reduces drastically and you can do good with what you have
2. It gives volume to your fashion language
3. Reduces the stress of deciding what else or what next to wear
4. Boosts your confidence.
How do you create a capsule wardrobe you say?
There are few questions you should provide answers to before I walk you through the how..
Q1. What is my skin tone?
Q2. Where will be my most visited places this season?
Q3. What does my wardrobe look like now?
Q4. How do I love to appear?
Q5. Am I loud on colors or I love neutral?
Q6. What are my sizes?
Q7. What am I most comfortable in?
Answering these questions will be a guide in decluttering your wardrobe and beginning the work.
How to build your capsule wardrobe.
1.Assess your current wardrobe:
what does your current wardrobe look like? What do you need to take out to achieve what you want? What are your frequent wears?
What outfits has been all year long in wardrobe without use? Outfits as such should be moved into a different section. Pick out what you find comfortable and your go to wears.
2.Choose your style:
How do you want your capsule wardrobe to look like? What do you want to achieve with your collection? Note that this is not a one time style. Do you want to look millennial? Corporate? Casual? Or a touch of the three through the season?
3. Choose your capsule pieces:
Pick out your essentials after you've identified your personal style. Now while doing this, you need to consider the 80/20 rule; 80% of the time, you likely wear 20% of your clothes.
Make sure to pick pieces that can be combined to create 10 outfits at least.
4. Learn combination and styling:
you're not picking out on all you've got. You're selecting a few (relative) to create different looks with. To make this work, you might need to see my earlier post on styling your oversized white shirt and some more that'd be of help. Watch videos that can be of help on pieces and color combination too.
5.Have a good maintained culture:
it's okay to update your capsule with what you think is missing or what you think will compliment what you have already. You can go ahead with that. Do well also to replace the old, most used or most worn items.
Keep your wardrobe in good shape.
You can set up your capsule wardrobe with something mini. It doesn't have to be 10, 20, or 30 pieces. You can still be stylish with what you have.
Follow these steps and you'll be well on your way to creating a wardrobe that takes less from you and makes getting dressed a delightful one for you!
You can share me a picture of what you're doing with your capsule wardrobe in the comment section when you do😊. I'd love too see.
